UW-Madison’s Jason Lee spoke with WORT/89.9 FM on Jan. 11 for a news report examining the various ways in which Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and state Democrats are attempting to make higher education more affordable. Lee is the outreach and programs manager for the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education. WISCAPE, which is housed within the School of Education, promotes the creation and sharing of ideas for addressing Wisconsin's postsecondary education challenges.

UW-Madison’s Matthew Hora reports that he will be speaking to some state legislators and their staff members at the Wisconsin State Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Hora will be talking about research he recently conducted on a three-year study about the relationship between workforce needs and higher education curricula in Wisconsin.

UW-Madison’s Katherine Cramer recently appeared on Wisconsin Public Television’s “Here and Now” program to talk about her new book, “The Politics of Resentment: Rural Consciousness in Wisconsin and the Rise of Scott Walker.” Cramer is a professor in the Department of Political Science and the faculty director of the Morgridge Center for Public Service, which is administratively housed within the School of Education. She also is an affiliate with the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE).

Several faculty members from UW-Madison were recognized by Education Week blogger Rick Hess as being among the very best when it comes to contributing substantially to the nation’s education discourse. These annual public influence rankings appear each January in Education Week’s “Straight Up” blog, which is authored by Hess. In the 2016 Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings released Jan. 6, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Sara Goldrick-Rab and Geoffrey Borman are included in these most recent efforts to spotlight a top 200.

UW-Madison’s Hsun-yu Chan and Xueli Wang are the co-authors of a report that was recently published by the journal Community College Review. The article is titled, “Interact for What? The Relationship Between Interpersonal Interaction Based on Motivation and Educational Outcomes Among Students in Manufacturing Programs at Two-Year Technical Colleges.” Chan is a postdoctoral research associate at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) who recently completed his Ph.D. with the School of Education’s No. 1-ranked Department of Educational Psychology. Wang is faculty member with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article headlined, “U.S. Helps Shaky Colleges Cope With Bad Student Loans: Government officials guide schools on how to clean up data and keep access to federal aid.” And among the experts the newspaper spoke with in an effort to put this topic in perspective was UW-Madison’s Nick Hillman. “They can help a school fix their default rate, but do they actually help fix their students’ economic well-being?” Hillman is quoted as telling the Wall Street Journal. “That’s what it should be all about.”
