Video from author David Hoeveler’s recent book talk, hosted by the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education
(WISCAPE), is now available on the WISCAPE YouTube channel
Hoeveler discussed his book, “John Bascom and the Origins of the Wisconsin Idea.”
Hoeveler said that Bascom originated “the idea of the state as an organism," which is central to the Wisconsin Idea. "It comes down to the idea that society is like an individual -- an individual organism -- it is a collection of cooperating parts. The impairment of one obstructs the healthy function of the other. The exclusion of any group or large segment of society deprives the organism of its collective strength, and therefore it’s needs for survival.”
The talk was cosponsored by the University of Wisconsin Press
and the La Follette School of Public Affairs
